From preform to drawn fiber
Fiber begins as a glass preform — a cylinder of ultra-pure silica with the refractive index profile of the finished fiber already built into it. The preform determines the optical behaviour of every kilometre drawn from it, which is why preform capability, rather than drawing capability, is the real barrier in this industry.

The mother reel

What it takes to draw fiber
A drawing mill needs preform production and draw towers. Both carry capital and process-control requirements high enough that the number of organisations worldwide capable of operating them is small, and the number in any single country smaller still. Preform capability in particular represents the larger share of the technical and capital barrier — it is the reason mills are counted in dozens globally rather than hundreds. The practical consequence: if a supplier claims to draw its own fiber, that claim is checkable. Mills are known entities in this industry, and the list is short.
What a drawing mill is good at — and what it will not do for you
Mills control what no one downstream can: the optical properties of the glass, batch-to-batch consistency, and supply volume during allocation periods.
What they generally will not do is sell you four kilometres on a 3D-printed reel. Mill economics are built on volume, standard formats and long production runs. Minimum quantities are large, reel formats are fixed, and application-specific packaging sits outside the model. That is not a deficiency — it is what makes mill-scale production possible at all.

Where a trader genuinely helps
Traders are the most casually dismissed role in this chain, usually by suppliers who want you to buy from them instead. The dismissal is unearned.

Two further patterns worth noticing:
“Source factory” and brand names in the same listing. A supplier describing itself as the manufacturer while listing major fiber brand names as the product it supplies has described two different positions in one breath. Not necessarily dishonestly — it may draw nothing and distribute those brands, which is a perfectly sound business. But the two claims cannot both be about the same product.
Buyer guides that end at their author. A supplier-published verification checklist whose criteria all resolve to “buy from a source factory”, written by a self-described source factory, is a sales funnel in the shape of a method. The way to test any such guide, including this one, is to apply its criteria to its author and see whether they were designed to be survivable.
The Questions That Reveal the Position
These questions are not adversarial and a well-run supplier of any type will answer them readily. They are designed so that theporma of the answer places the supplier, regardless of what label they use.
Questions about the fiber
- Who drew this fiber, and where? A mill names itself. A converter names its source. A trader names its supplier, who may name a source. Any of these is a good answer. Vagueness is the signal.
- Can I see the mill’s specification for this fiber, and separately your own test data for the reel I am buying? These are two different documents. A supplier who conflates them is claiming credit for the other’s work.
- What proof test level and tensile strength apply, stated separately? Covered in detail in our guide to reading a tensile strength specification — the answer also tells you how carefully the supplier reads its own datasheets.
- Under what test conditions were the bend loss figures measured? Radius and turn count both. Figures measured at different conditions are not comparable, and a supplier who presents them as if they were either does not know or is counting on you not to.
Questions about the reel
- Who wound this reel, and what tension was used? A converter answers directly. A trader relays. A mill answers with its standard format, which tells you the reel is a production output rather than an engineered one.
- Can the reel geometry be changed for my application? This separates conversion capability from stock-holding immediately.
- What is the reel made of, and what does it weigh wound? Trivial for anyone who built it, awkward for anyone who did not.
About traceability
- Can this delivery reel be traced to a mother reel batch? Ask what the traceability record actually links — many chains break at the conversion step.
- Do you issue per-reel test records, or batch samples? Per-reel means the reel you received was measured. Batch sample means one from the group was.
- If a reel fails in service, what is the diagnostic path? The answer maps the chain: who investigates, who they contact, how far back it reaches.
How to read the answers
Judge the shape, not the label:
- Direct, specific, bounded — “we do X, our partner does Y, here is the record for each” — is the strongest answer available from any role.
- Direct but unbounded — claims capability at every stage with no partner anywhere — warrants verification, because full vertical integration from preform to custom reel is rare and easy to confirm.
- Deflected — “we are a source factory, all our products are high quality” — is not an answer to the question asked.
A supplier who says “we do not draw the fiber” has given you more usable information than one who says “we are the manufacturer”.
Red Flags in Supplier Claims
None of the following proves dishonesty. Each is a prompt to ask one more question.
Manufacturer claim alongside third-party brand names. Two positions in one listing. Ask which product the manufacturing claim refers to.
A specification sheet that does not match the product. Telecom cabling parameters on a specialised application page, or application text describing an entirely different use case, usually means the datasheet was inherited rather than measured.
Figures compared under different test conditions. Bend loss at different radii or turn counts, tensile strength for bare fiber against a cabled construction. Ask for the test condition behind every number before comparing any of them.
A single number that cannot describe the product. Tensile figures in the hundreds of newtons on bare 125 µm glass exceed the theoretical strength of silica; they describe a reinforced cable. Convert before comparing.
Certifications without scope. An ISO certificate covers a defined scope at a defined site. Ask which entity and which activity — a certificate held by a supplier’s supplier does not transfer.
Market data without a citable source. Price forecasts and shortage percentages cited to “industry reports” with no traceable reference. Treat as sales framing, not as data.
Competitor pricing in a supplier’s own comparison table. A supplier quoting other named suppliers’ prices and lead times is presenting numbers it does not control and cannot be held to.
Traceability: What to Demand and What Is Realistic
Traceability breaks at handoffs, and conversion is a handoff.
What is reasonable to require:
- Per-reel identification carried on the physical reel
- Per-reel OTDR trace and attenuation record matching that identifier
- A documented link from the delivery reel back to the mother reel or batch it was wound from
- The name of the drawing mill for the fiber supplied
What is often not available, and why:
Mill-side process data — draw tower parameters, preform lot history — generally does not travel downstream. Mills treat it as proprietary and rarely release it beyond their direct customers. A converter who cannot supply it is not hiding anything; a supplier who claims to have it should be asked to show it.
The practical test: ask for the traceability record for a reel you already hold. Documentation that exists as a policy but not as a document is common, and one request tells you which you are dealing with.
