Almost every supplier occupies one of these positions, and most legitimately describe themselves as a factory because they operate real facilities. A converter’s winding line is a factory. A cable plant is a factory. Neither draws fiber.

The useful question is notare you a factory”. यो छ “which of these three things do you do, and who does the other two”. A supplier who answers that clearly has told you more than any certificate will.


How Bare Fiber Actually Reaches You

Three stages sit between raw material and the reel on your bench.

From preform to drawn fiber

Fiber begins as a glass preform — a cylinder of ultra-pure silica with the refractive index profile of the finished fiber already built into it. The preform determines the optical behaviour of every kilometre drawn from it, which is why preform capability, rather than drawing capability, is the real barrier in this industry.

The mother reel

Fiber leaves the drawing mill on large-format reels — tens of kilometres each, in the mill’s standard configuration. This format suits mills and cable plants, both of which consume fiber in bulk.

It does not suit most end applications. A drone reel needs a specific length on a specific spool geometry at a specific weight. A specialised assembly may need a coating diameter the mill runs only in volume. The mother reel is a production output, वितरण ढाँचा होइन.

Both carry capital and process-control requirements high enough that the number of organisations worldwide capable of operating them is small, and the number in any single country smaller still. Preform capability in particular represents the larger share of the technical and capital barrier — it is the reason mills are counted in dozens globally rather than hundreds. The practical consequence: if a supplier claims to draw its own fiber, that claim is checkable. Mills are known entities in this industry, and the list is short.

What a drawing mill is good at — and what it will not do for you

Mills control what no one downstream can: the optical properties of the glass, batch-to-batch consistency, and supply volume during allocation periods.

What they generally will not do is sell you four kilometres on a 3D-printed reel. Mill economics are built on volume, standard formats and long production runs. Minimum quantities are large, reel formats are fixed, and application-specific packaging sits outside the model. That is not a deficiency — it is what makes mill-scale production possible at all.

Buyers who need small quantities, custom lengths or engineered reels are not being fobbed off when a mill declines. They are being told, accurately, that they need a converter.

This is the role most often understated, including by the companies performing it.

What re-spooling actually adds

Converting a mother reel into a delivery reel involves several decisions, each of which affects whether the fiber performs in your application.

  • Length and tolerance. Cut to your requirement rather than to the mill’s standard format.
  • Winding tension. Wound too loose and layers shift and cross; too tight and the fiber sits under sustained stress for the life of the reel. The correct window depends on the fiber and the reel geometry.
  • Reel geometry. Barrel diameter sets the bend radius the fiber holds for the entire time it is wound. Flange spacing and exit path govern whether it releases cleanly. For dynamic payout applications this is a design problem, not a packaging choice — we cover the mechanics in why drone fiber breaks during payout.
  • Coating and protective treatment. Optional resin over the wound pack, where the application calls for it.
  • Labelling and traceability. Reel identification, batch reference, custom or OEM marking.
  • परीक्षण. Per-reel OTDR and attenuation records, confirming the fiber on this reel rather than a batch sample.

None of this changes the glass. All of it changes whether the glass survives your process.

What a converter cannot control

A converter does not determine attenuation, bend performance, मोड क्षेत्र व्यास, or proof test level. Those are set at the mill, and no amount of careful winding improves them.

This has a direct implication for buyersa converter’s quality claims should be about conversion. Winding control, reel engineering, परीक्षण, traceability — these are legitimately theirs to claim. Optical performance is not. A converter presenting mill specifications as evidence of its own manufacturing capability is describing someone else’s work.

It also means a converter is only as good as its fiber source. Ask where the mother reel comes from. A converter that cannot or will not say has a gap in its own traceability, whatever it says about yours.

Where a trader genuinely helps

Traders are the most casually dismissed role in this chain, usually by suppliers who want you to buy from them instead. The dismissal is unearned.

A trader holding local inventory can deliver in days where a mill order takes weeks. A trader working across several brands can compare availability when one producer is allocated out. Traders absorb payment terms, handle export documentation, and make small orders viable that no mill would accept. For buyers who need standard product quickly and in modest volume, a competent trader is often the correct answer.

Where a trader cannot help you

A trader does not modify the product. If you need a non-standard length, a specific reel, a different coating diameter or a custom label, it must be sourced upstream or converted elsewhere — which adds a step and a margin.

A trader also cannot answer a technical question directly. Queries about test conditions, batch history or process parameters get relayed, and relayed answers lose precision. When something goes wrong, the diagnostic loop runs through an intermediary.

And a trader’s traceability is inherited. If its own supplier keeps poor records, so does it, regardless of what its quality documentation says.

The failure mode is not being a trader. It is being a trader while presenting as a mill — because then the buyer expects a level of technical control and batch accountability that is structurally unavailable.

The phrase entered export marketing as shorthand foryou are buying direct, without a middleman margin”. That was useful information once.

It stopped being useful because nothing in it is defined. A company that operates a winding line is a source factory for winding. A company that assembles patch cords is a source factory for patch cords. Neither statement is false, and neither tells you who drew the fiber.

The result is a market where the term is universal and therefore empty, and where buyers relying on it are filtering on a question that every supplier passes.

Two further patterns worth noticing:

Source factoryand brand names in the same listing. A supplier describing itself as the manufacturer while listing major fiber brand names as the product it supplies has described two different positions in one breath. Not necessarily dishonestly — it may draw nothing and distribute those brands, which is a perfectly sound business. But the two claims cannot both be about the same product.

Buyer guides that end at their author. A supplier-published verification checklist whose criteria all resolve tobuy from a source factory”, written by a self-described source factory, is a sales funnel in the shape of a method. The way to test any such guide, including this one, is to apply its criteria to its author and see whether they were designed to be survivable.

The Questions That Reveal the Position

These questions are not adversarial and a well-run supplier of any type will answer them readily. They are designed so that theआकार of the answer places the supplier, regardless of what label they use.

Questions about the fiber

  1. Who drew this fiber, and where? A mill names itself. A converter names its source. A trader names its supplier, who may name a source. Any of these is a good answer. Vagueness is the signal.
  2. Can I see the mill’s specification for this fiber, and separately your own test data for the reel I am buying? These are two different documents. A supplier who conflates them is claiming credit for the other’s work.
  3. What proof test level and tensile strength apply, stated separately? Covered in detail in our guide to reading a tensile strength specification — the answer also tells you how carefully the supplier reads its own datasheets.
  4. Under what test conditions were the bend loss figures measured? Radius and turn count both. Figures measured at different conditions are not comparable, and a supplier who presents them as if they were either does not know or is counting on you not to.

Questions about the reel

  1. Who wound this reel, and what tension was used? A converter answers directly. A trader relays. A mill answers with its standard format, which tells you the reel is a production output rather than an engineered one.
  2. Can the reel geometry be changed for my application? This separates conversion capability from stock-holding immediately.
  3. What is the reel made of, and what does it weigh wound? Trivial for anyone who built it, awkward for anyone who did not.

About traceability

  1. Can this delivery reel be traced to a mother reel batch? Ask what the traceability record actually links — many chains break at the conversion step.
  2. Do you issue per-reel test records, or batch samples? Per-reel means the reel you received was measured. Batch sample means one from the group was.
  3. If a reel fails in service, what is the diagnostic path? The answer maps the chain: who investigates, who they contact, how far back it reaches.

How to read the answers

Judge the shape, not the label:

  • Direct, specific, bounded - “we do X, our partner does Y, here is the record for each— is the strongest answer available from any role.
  • Direct but unbounded — claims capability at every stage with no partner anywhere — warrants verification, because full vertical integration from preform to custom reel is rare and easy to confirm.
  • Deflected - “we are a source factory, all our products are high quality— is not an answer to the question asked.

A supplier who sayswe do not draw the fiberhas given you more usable information than one who sayswe are the manufacturer”.


Red Flags in Supplier Claims

None of the following proves dishonesty. Each is a prompt to ask one more question.

Manufacturer claim alongside third-party brand names. Two positions in one listing. Ask which product the manufacturing claim refers to.

A specification sheet that does not match the product. Telecom cabling parameters on a specialised application page, or application text describing an entirely different use case, usually means the datasheet was inherited rather than measured.

Figures compared under different test conditions. Bend loss at different radii or turn counts, tensile strength for bare fiber against a cabled construction. Ask for the test condition behind every number before comparing any of them.

A single number that cannot describe the product. Tensile figures in the hundreds of newtons on bare 125 µm glass exceed the theoretical strength of silica; they describe a reinforced cable. Convert before comparing.

Certifications without scope. An ISO certificate covers a defined scope at a defined site. Ask which entity and which activity — a certificate held by a supplier’s supplier does not transfer.

Market data without a citable source. Price forecasts and shortage percentages cited toindustry reportswith no traceable reference. Treat as sales framing, not as data.

Competitor pricing in a supplier’s own comparison table. A supplier quoting other named suppliersprices and lead times is presenting numbers it does not control and cannot be held to.


Traceability: What to Demand and What Is Realistic

Traceability breaks at handoffs, and conversion is a handoff.

What is reasonable to require:

  • Per-reel identification carried on the physical reel
  • Per-reel OTDR trace and attenuation record matching that identifier
  • A documented link from the delivery reel back to the mother reel or batch it was wound from
  • The name of the drawing mill for the fiber supplied

What is often not available, and why:

Mill-side process data — draw tower parameters, preform lot history — generally does not travel downstream. Mills treat it as proprietary and rarely release it beyond their direct customers. A converter who cannot supply it is not hiding anything; a supplier who claims to have it should be asked to show it.

The practical test: ask for the traceability record for a reel you already hold. Documentation that exists as a policy but not as a document is common, and one request tells you which you are dealing with.


Where Fibconet Sits
