Fiber Patch Cord is a fiber optic cable capped at either end with connectors that allow it to be rapidly and conveniently connected to CATV, an optical switch, or other telecommunication equipment.
Having a thick layer of protection, it is used to connect the optical transmitter, receiver, and terminal box. This is known as “interconnect-style cabling”
Fiber Optic Patch Cord(also known as optical fiber connector)
It means that both ends of the optical cable are equipped with connector plugs to realize the active connection of the optical path.
In the center is the glass core for light propagation.
As a multimode fiber, the diameter of the core is 50 μm to 65 μm, roughly equivalent to the thickness of a human hair.

Patch cords can mainly divide into Indoor, Outdoor, Armoured Patchcord, Multicore Bundle Distribution Type, Drop Patch Cord and CPRI Patch Cord.
According to the connector, we can divide the patch cord into FC, ST, SC, LC, MU, MPO, E2000, MTRJ, SMA, etc. Following are some introductions for common types:
① FC: The external reinforcement method is a metal sleeve, turnbuckle fastening method. Generally used on the ODF side (the most used on the distribution frame)
② SC: the connector connected to the GBIC optical module, rectangular shell. Plug-in pin-bolt type fastening method, which does not need to be rotated. (Most used on router switches)
③ ST: commonly used in optical fiber distribution frames, round outer shell. Turnbuckle fastening method. (For 10Base-F connection, the connector is usually ST type. Commonly used in fiber distribution frame)
④ LC: the connector connected to the SFP module, which is made of a modular jack (RJ) latch mechanism that is easy to operate. (commonly used by routers)
According to the contact method of the end surface, it can divide into PC, UPC and APC.
The main difference between APC and UPC lies in the different grinding methods of the ferrule section.
The end face of UPC is a plane with a certain radian, while the end face of APC is an inclined plane with an angle of 8 degrees.

Patch Cord Testing Procedures and Machines
● Use an insertion return loss tester. First, use a light pen to measure whether the jumper is clear, and make sure that the optical fiber is not broken and measure the index.
● General carrier-grade indicators: insertion loss less than 0.3dB return loss greater than 50dB (conventional insertion return loss)
● Optical performance testing, including return loss/insertion loss testing. The test instrument can use the FibKey7602 return loss/insertion loss integrated tester.
● Scratches on the end face of optical fiber are inspected by using a video optical fiber magnifying glass. For example, many factories use FibViewFV-400PA for inspection.
The instrument can give the clearest images and is extremely easy to operate.
Some customers use the FibKey-5600 variable magnification magnifier for detection.
The instrument integrates 400 times, 200 times, and 80 times magnifying glasses in one,
It can clearly and conveniently observe the condition of the fiber end face and ferrule end face.
Of course, relevant software can also be used for automatic inspe ction.

⑦ The Difference Between Optical Fiber Patchcord and Pigtail
1. The pigtail is used to connect the optical cable and the patchcord, and the patchcord is used to connect the pigtail to the terminal equipment.
2. Optical fiber patchcord is used from equipment to optical fiber wiring link, also known as optical fiber connector.
It has a thicker protective layer and is generally used in the connection between the optical transceiver and the terminal box to realize the active connection of the optical path.
The pigtail is only one end with a connector, and the other end is a broken end of an optical fiber core, also known as a pigtail.
It is connected to other fiber optic cable cores by fusion splicing and often appears in fiber optic terminal boxes to connect fiber optic cables and fiber optic transceivers (couplers, jumpers, etc. are also used between them).
