India’s optical fibre cable capacity has expanded on the back of BharatNet and 5G rollout, and the manufacturers that grew fastest did so in different directions. One built preform-to-cable vertical integration for export markets. One built an EPC business around government tenders. One is India’s largest wire and cable group where fibre is a small slice of a much larger business.
Those differences decide which of them can quote your project. This page maps them.
Written for procurement teams and distributors sourcing from India, and for buyers comparing Indian supply against other origins.
1. How this list was built
Inclusion criteria
- Manufactures optical fibre cable in India (not a trading or installation-only business)
- Publicly traded or with publicly verifiable operations, so claims can be checked
- Corporate status confirmed against exchange filings and NCLT records as of the verification date
Sources: BSE/NSE filings and investor presentations, company websites, NCLT records, industry press. Company-status claims link to source.
Ordering: grouped by market focus, not ranked. Two entries share a parent group, and that is stated where it applies.
A note on capacity figures: where a company publishes fibre kilometre (fkm) capacity in its investor material, that number is used, because it is comparable across manufacturers in a way that revenue is not.
2. Supplier comparison table
| Company | HQ / Plants | Yakavambwa | Chiyero | Revenue basis | Best For | Status |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Sterlite Technologies (Stl) | Pune, Maharashtra; plants in India, Itari, UK, USA | 1988 | Multi-country manufacturing | Listed (BSE/NSE); optical business reported separately | Export orders, vertically integrated fibre supply, US-compliant product via SC plant | Active |
| HFCL Limited | New Delhi; plants Hyderabad, Goa | 1987 | OF capacity expanding to ~34 million fkm (Q4 FY26 disclosure) | Listed (BSE/NSE) | BharatNet and government tenders, defence and railway cable, turnkey EPC | Active |
| Polycab India | Mumbai, Maharashtra | 1996 | India’s largest wire & cable group | Listed; group revenue is predominantly wire & cable, not fibre | Large-volume orders where financial capacity is the constraint | Active |
| Finolex Cables | Pune, Maharashtra; plant in Goa | 1958 | Nationwide distribution network | Listed (BSE/NSE) | Tier-2/tier-3 distribution reach, regional ISP supply | Active |
| Vindhya telelinks (VTL) | Rewa, Madhya Pradesh | 1983 | Cable plus EPC operations | Listed; MP Birla Group — related to Universal Cables | Government EPC packages, dark fibre build-and-lease (IP-1 licence) | Active |
| Universal Cables | Satna, Madhya Pradesh | 1962 | Furukawa technology partnership | Listed; MP Birla Group — related to VTL | Oil & gas and railway applications, Japanese-process production | Active |
| Aksh Optifibre | New Delhi | 1986 | Preform and FRP rod production | Listed | See §5 before shortlisting | ⚠️ Insolvency process from June 2026 |
On revenue comparability: Polycab’s group revenue is several times STL’s, and almost all of it comes from wire and cable rather than optical fibre. Reading the two figures side by side as if they measured the same business would be misleading. Where a company publishes segment or capacity data, use that instead — and ask for fibre segment figures during the RFQ.
On the two MP Birla companies: Vindhya Telelinks and Universal Cables belong to the same group. They are separately listed, quote separately and serve different applications, so both are listed here — but if you are building a multi-vendor shortlist for risk diversification, treat them as one group exposure.

2. HFCL Limited
Nyanzvi yezvivakwa
HFCL combines manufacturing with large-scale EPC execution, which is why it appears on BharatNet and defence programmes where the buyer wants one contractor for both supply and build. Its optical fibre capacity is in active expansion — company disclosures put it on a path to roughly 34 million fkm from 28 million fkm, having already doubled from an earlier 14 million fkm base

3. Polycab India Limited
Mutungamiriri wehuwandu
Polycab is India’s largest wire and cable manufacturer, and that scale is genuinely useful for buyers whose constraint is order size or supplier financial standing. It is important to be precise about what that scale represents: the group’s revenue comes overwhelmingly from electrical wire and cable, with optical fibre cable a comparatively small segment.

4. Finolex tambo dzinotsigirwa
Champion's Champion
Finolex’s advantage is not manufacturing capacity but a distribution network reaching deep into tier-2 and tier-3 India. For a regional ISP or a contractor needing material available near site rather than shipped from a single plant, that network is the differentiator.

6. Vindhya telelinks limited
Nyanzvi yehurumende
VTL’s strength lies in their deep understanding of government procurement processes and ability to deliver VTL pairs cable manufacturing with network engineering and holds an IP-1 licence, which allows it to build and lease dark fibre infrastructure rather than only supply material. Its track record is concentrated in government procurement, where familiarity with tender processes is itself a qualification.

7. Aksh Optifibre Limited
One of the few independent Indian preform manufacturers, and currently in an insolvency resolution process.
What happened. The National Company Law Tribunal (NCLT), Jaipur Bench, admitted Aksh Optifibre into the Corporate Insolvency Resolution Process on 19 Chikumi 2026, appointing an interim resolution professional and imposing the Section 14 moratorium (Reuters via TradingView, announcement summary).
Why this matters beyond one company. Aksh was one of very few Indian manufacturers producing optical preform domestically, alongside FRP rod for cable reinforcement. Preform capacity is the upstream constraint in any fibre supply chain — a cable plant without secured preform or fibre supply is dependent on the global fibre market. Buyers evaluating Indian supply should treat upstream integration as a question worth asking of every supplier, not only of this one.
