What is Fiber PLC splitter?
The PLC (Planar Lightwave Circuit) type optical splitter is an integrated waveguide optical power distribution device based on a quartz substrate. It has the advantages of transmitting different wavelengths, uniform signal distribution, large splitting ratio of a single device, and low cost. It is the most important optical splitter used in FTTH construction.
The optical splitter is one of the most important components of the ODN network. It generally has one or more input ends and multiple outputs ends, and M*N is used for corresponding. The optical splitter mainly plays the role of branch and connection in the ODN network.
A passive optical splitter can divide an incident beam into several beams based on a specific ratio. Its basic structure is a 1×4 split configuration, which means that an incoming light beam from a single input fiber optic cable is split into four beams and then transmitted via four separate output fiber optic cables. Each user at the input cable’s end can use 1/4 of its bandwidth.
The 2×64 optical split configuration is a little more difficult. In a 2×64 split configuration, the splitter has two input terminals and 64 output terminals. Its function is to divide two incident beams from two independent optical input cables into sixty-four beams and transmit them via sixty-four independent optical output cables. With the rapid growth of global FTTx, to meet the user requirement, the demand for larger split configurations in the network is also increasing.
The loss of the optical splitter will directly affect the stability of the PON network. If the loss of the optical splitter is too high, it will lead to a poor or unstable network signal in the area, causing user dissatisfaction.
Types of Fiber PLC splitter
The optical splitter is mainly composed of the core PLC optical splitting device and the packaging box.
According to different application scenarios, the packaging types of optical splitters are also different, mainly including ABS BOX, module type, mini type, etc.
The ABS box plc splitter adopts the box body encapsulated by ABS plastic. The port is led out by pigtail and has a connector plug. There are generally three types of fiber output sleeves: 0.9mm, 2.0mm, and 3.0mm.
The module type plc splitter is packaged in an ABS plastic box. It is a PLC optical splitter with an adapter. It is mainly installed in the optical fiber splitting box and the optical cable transfer box.
The mini plc splitter is packaged with steel pipe, and the fiber outlet uses a 0.9mm loose tube. It is a PLC optical splitter with a connector plug and is used in scenarios with small installation space.
Introduction of optical splitter product indicators
Material: The quality of industrial plastics is required to be qualified. Improper use of materials will cause the product to be easily damaged, have a short service life, affect the normal transmission of optical signals, and even cause a fire in the equipment room.
Optical performance: It is required to evaluate the performance of insertion loss, return loss, operating wavelength, polarization-dependent loss, directivity, and uniformity. If the optical performance does not meet the product requirements, the transmission distance will be shortened, the transmission performance will be degraded, and a series of problems will be caused.
Environmental performance: The environmental performance requires the evaluation of the optical performance after low temperature, high temperature, damp heat, and other tests. If the environmental performance does not meet the product requirements, the optical splitter will be easily affected by the ambient temperature. It will increase the fiber loss, and also affect the service life.
Mechanical properties: Mechanical properties evaluate the optical properties after drop, vibration, torsion, and stretching. If the mechanical properties are not up to standard, the optical splitter will easily be damaged during construction.
Appearance package: The appearance package should be smooth, clean, and free of oil stains, deformation, scars, and cracks, and metal parts should not be damaged or rusted. The pigtail connector is working normally, and the number identification corresponds to the port. If the appearance package does not meet the requirements, the optical splitter will have poor matching or even damage during use.
